Melissa Gao b. 2005
Born in Beijing, China, Melissa is an artist whose practice centers around memory, emotion, perception, and the sensory experience of everyday life. With a foundation in painting, particularly in oil and acrylic, she developed a deep connection to form, color, and texture. Sensitive and emotionally intuitive, she turns to visual language as a way to express what she cannot put into words.
Her practice also extends into other materials such as sculpture, video, and installation. Across all media, her work explores the tension between inner emotional and external perception. Whether she is tying braided ropes between personal objects or capturing fleeting feelings in layered brushstrokes, her work consistently engages with themes of personal history, identity, and time.
Deeply influenced by the city she grew up in, her work often carries a strong sense of the feeling of lived life. The local environments, subtle gestures, light through windows, and shifting moods are all inspiration for creation. While some works are personal and intimate, others lean into ambiguity and abstraction, inviting the viewer to bring their own experiences and interpretations.
“I’m drawn to atmospheres, those moments that can’t be described with language. I try to capture that sensation through my work. Maybe it’s because I’m from Beijing, but a sense of everyday life always shows up in my work. I hope people who view my work can also feel something of their own, see their own lives, emotions, and thoughts that are reflected back from my work.”

出生于中国北京，高与荫的创作经常围绕记忆、情感和感知等主题。绘画是她的主要创作方式，擅长使用油画和丙烯来探索形状、颜色和材料质感所带来的视觉效果。作为一个感受力强的人，她习惯于用视觉画面来表达那些用语言难以描述的思绪和感受。
除了绘画，她也尝试雕塑、影像、装置等不同媒介。无论是用编织的绳子连接有回忆的旧物，还是用多层的笔触捕捉一瞬间的情绪，这些作品都在探讨自我感受与外界的联系，围绕个人经历、身份认知和时间流逝等主题。
成长于北京的经历往往让她的作品充满生活气息。生活环境里的细节、琐事、瞬间的情绪波动、窗户透进来的阳光等流动的片段都是她创作的灵感来源。有些作品展现个人回忆，有些则更模糊抽象，邀请观众带着自己的故事来欣赏，在作品里找到属于自己的理解。
“艺术好像从小对于我来说就是生命中不可或缺的一个东西。我用笔触、颜色、色块和肌理来表达我的情绪、我的回忆，去传达我想探索的空间感和时间感。我喜欢氛围，那些无法用语言描述出来的感觉。我用画笔来描述我对它们的理解，还有那些我无法直接表达的东西。可能受到北京这个城市的影响，生活感总是出现在我的作品中。我希望欣赏我作品的人也可以从中感受到自己的生活，自己的理解和情感。”
